English: Front page of the first issue of the Norwegian women's weekly magazine "Urd," which was published in Oslo, Norway between 1897 and 1958. The first issue of the inaugural year is dated "Saturday, January 2, 1897."
The magazine header features a large vignette drawn by the illustrator Andreas Bloch (1860–1917). The drawing depicts the norse fate goddess Urðr, beautiful, long-haired, and wearing a gown, watering the Yggdrasil tree with two swans on the water to the left. In an upper frame of the drawing, the name "URD" is written in capital letters in Fraktur script. In a frame at the bottom, the magazine's motto is written in uppercase letters and adorned with small, counter-clockwise swastikas as symbols of good luck:
Bloch's header with the swastikas was used until 1943, when a slightly simplified version of the illustration was introduced. The first article is titled "Thomasine Lie" and features a portrait of the wife of the Norwegian writer Jonas Lie. The text is written in Fraktur script and begins as follows: "The other day, I received an invitation to write about you, Thomasine. You were to grace the first page of a women's magazine. As a guardian spirit! Yes, that suits you well. May every word written in this magazine be worthy of you; that is the best wish I can have for the magazine." The text is signed by (1843–1914). The image is copied from a scanned magazine in the National Library of Norway's collection of magazines and periodicals.
Sist i ukebladet (side 12) står blant annet:
