Description
English: Chart showing assets and liabilities of the United States as a fraction of GDP 1945-2009. Data retrieved from [1].

Domestic financial assets are defined as total assets minus foreign financial liabilities and US-owned foreign equities (which are both counted as US-owned foreign assets). Domestic financial liabilities are defined as total liabilities minus foreign financial liabilities.

Tangible assets includes tangible assets owned by:

  • Households and non-profits
  • Nonfarm noncorporate business
  • Nonfarm nonfinancial corporate business
It does not include tangible assets owned by federal, state, and local governments, or tangible assets owned by farm business and the financial sector. Data for government and the financial sector is unavailable before 1960 and data for farm business is not available at all.
