English: The U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser USS Chicago (CG-11) in the Coral Sea, in October 1979. The photograph was taken from the deck of the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne (R21) as the two ships joined company to conduct a replenishment at sea exercise. The photo was taken during during exercise "Kangaroo II", 10-28 October 1979, which involved seven U.S. Navy vessels and twenty Royal Australian Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy ships. Chicago joined on 15 October after memorial services were conducted in the vicinity of the Solomons for her predecessor USS Chicago (CA-29), and for HMAS Canberra (D33) lost off Savo Island in August 1942. Chicago proceeded to Sydney for a week immediately after the exercise, and subsequently arrived back in San Diego via Subic Bay and Pearl Harbor on 17 December to begin preparations for her decommissioning. |
