Summary

[edit]
Description The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hazelwood (DD-531) steaming near Newport, Rhode Island (USA), circa 1959-1960, following conversion to the U.S. Navy's first Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter (DASH) equipped destroyer. While attached to Destroyer Development Group 2, she underwent extensive training exercises to acquaint her crew with air operations. Pending availability of the Gyrodyne DSN-1 drone helicopter, she operated a Kaman HTK helicopter with a safety pilot. The DSN-1, with homing torpedo armament, was intended to provide surface ships with longer-range anti-submarine capabilities.
