Description |
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Howorth (DD-592) being sunk by submarine torpedoes off San Clemente Island, California (USA), on 8 March 1962. The small landing craft astern was designed to move the ship to present the submarine with a moving target. This view shows the second torpedo exploding amidships. Note the forestack cap blown into the air by the explosion. The torpedos were fired by Submarine Flotilla 1 (COMSUBFLOT 1). |
