060616-N-0000M-001 Gulf of Thailand (June 16, 2006) - A plaque placed on the aft capstan of the wreckage in the Gulf of Thailand believed to be that of World War II submarine USS Lagarto (SS 371) is seen in this screen grab of video. Divers from USS Salvor (ARS 52) conducted six-days of diving to positively identify USS Lagarto as part of the Thailand phase of the exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, or CARAT. Divers will send photographs and video of the submarine to the Naval Historical Center in Washington for further analysis. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and six Southeast Asia nations designed to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.
