Summary[edit]
DescriptionUSS Providence (CL-82) at Gibraltar in September 1948.jpg | The U.S. Navy light cruiser USS Providence (CL-82) with the gasoline tanker USS Chewaucan (AOG-50) coming alongside at Gibraltar, circa late September 1948, as seen from the heavy cruiser USS Albany (CA-123). Sixth Task Fleet destroyers are moored in the right distance. The photo was taken as Albany relieved USS Fargo (CL-106) as flagship of the Sixth Task Fleet, operating in the Mediterranean Sea. Two other cruisers and ten destroyers were among the units relieved in line with the U.S. Navy policy of rotating ships on duty in the Mediterranean approximately every four months. The presence of a number of Royal Navy ships, among them the battleship HMS Vanguard (23), resulted in the largest concentration of U.S. and British warships at Gibraltar since the Second World War. |
