English: US energy consumption by source from 1775-2010 using a semilog scale. Exponential increases or decreases are straight lines on a semilog scale. From 1795 to 1973 total energy increased by 2.97%/year. From 1795 to 1845, wood increased by 2.99%/year. From 1900 to 1945 wood decreased by 1.04%/year. From 1975 to 1980 wood increased by 10.57%/year. From 1982 to 2010, wood decreased by 0.83%/year. From 1860 to 1910 coal increased by 6.61%/year, and by 2.10%/year from 1960 to 2000. From 1949 to 1971 petroleum increased by 4.39%/year. From 1895 to 1970 natural gas increased by 7.40%/year. From 1950 to 1975 hydro increased by 4.50%/year. Nuclear increased by 8.67%/year from 1980 to 1990. From 2002 to 2010 biofuel increased by 25.40%/year. From 1980 to 1990 geothermal increased by 11.77%/year. Wind increased by 32.69%/year from 2000 to 2010, and solar increased by 26.48%/year from 2006 to 2010. Most of the solar installed in the U.S. is distributed generation, and is not included. From 2006 to 2011 solar installed capacity including distributed generation increased by 35.8%/year, and photovoltaics increased by 45%/year, and by 85% in 2011. All data is from the U.S. EIA[1]. Chart uses 3412 Btu/kWh for hydro, nuclear, geothermal, wind, and solar. |
