Outlays of the US federal government as a percent of GDP

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Outlays (Expenditures) of the US federal government as a percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Data since 1901 from The White House with earlier data from Bicentennial Edition: Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970, combined in the USGDPpresidents dataset in the Ecdat package for R (programming language).[1] Vertical gray bands are wars documented in USGDPpresidents. Horizontal reference lines are 2 and 3 percent. These outlays peaked at 13 percent in 1865, 23 percent in 1919, and 41 percent in 1945 and 1946. However, except for war and war debt, this ranged between 1.0 and 2.6 percent of GDP until World War I. It was 1.05 percent in 1811, 1.4 percent in 1916, and 3.0 percent in 1926-1929. (Vertical scale is logarithmic.)
