Description

Altstadt - Marktplatz

The 'Fischkasten' or 'Syrlinbrunnen' - these are the names for the Ulm market fountain near the town hall - is, in terms of structure, the oldest surviving Ulm fountain. The name 'Fischkasten' stems from the fact that the Ulm fishermen originally used it: here they offered their freshly caught fish alive. The triangular pinnacle in the middle of the twelve-sided box is a masterpiece of late Gothic ornamental art. Also worth seeing are the special stonemasonry of the twisted crown with the free-worked branches and knight figures with the coat of arms, the imperial eagle and the Ulm shield. Above the knight, the builder of the fountain, Ulm master Jörg Syrlin the Elder, has attached his full name, his symbol and the year 1482. The originals of the three knight figures can be seen in the Ulm Museum.
