Description

Neustadt - Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz Founded in 1641, Theater Ulm is the oldest municipal theater in Germany. Today, it operates distinct ensembles for opera/operetta, acting und ballet. This theater was rebuilt and expanded again and again during the 19th century and last expanded substantially in 1923. Herbert von Karajan had his first engagement at the Ulmer Theater - as first conductor - from 1929 to 1934. At the end of World War II, bombs almost completely destroyed the theater building. In the early post-war years, an interim theater was set up in the undamaged gymnasium of the Wagner School, which remained in operation until the inauguration of the new building in 1969. Arch.
