Summary
[edit]DescriptionUltraudion tube.jpg |
English: An Audion tube, the first vacuum tube that could amplify. The first triode, it consists of a partially evacuated glass tube with three electrodes inside: a filament, grid, and plate. About 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter. The Audion was invented in 1906 by American engineer Lee De Forest. This type, called an "Ultraudion", manufactured by De Forest for a few years beginning in 1910, was designed for use in regenerative radio receivers. It has two filaments located in the center of the tube, so that when one burned out the "spare" could be used. The grid consists of two flat wire screens on either side of the filament, and the plate consists of two square sheet metal plates outside the grids. The filament was connected to the screw terminal at top, while the grid and plate were connected to the wires brought out at the bottom.. The residual air left in these early "soft" audion tubes due to inadequate evacuation created ions that shortened the life of the filament, caused the tube to operate erratically, and gave it different characteristice than modern "hard vacuum" triodes. |
