Seine Ersterwähnung erfuhr das Gemälde 1754 in einem Inventar der Königlichen Galerie in Dresden. Damals galt es noch als ein Werk de Heems, doch bereits der Galeriekatalog von 1848 schrieb es Jan van Kessel zu. Damals war das Bild in der Äußeren Galerie – den der nordalpinen Malerei vorbehaltenen Räumen – des Galeriegebäudes am Neumarkt ausgestellt. Es gehört zu den Werken, die seit 1945 vermisst werden.
