Description
English: Portrait of 'Uncle Alfred'. The painting depicts "Uncle Alfred,' who was a house servant at The Hermitage and lived there until 1901. Uncle Alfred had been born a slave at The Hermitage, and spent his entire life on the property. He was the first tour guide of the house after the Jacksons departed, and he was later buried at The Hermitage, where his grave can be seen today. The portrait of him seated, with a cane, was purchased from a descendant for $25 in about 1960. From a private collection. Image courtesy of the Tennessee Portrait Project.
