Summary

[edit]
Description

United 1030 arrives at dusk from Houston. This flight is operated as a temporary domestic leg for the Boeing 787, introduced into United revenue service less than three weeks prior.

N26906 is the second of two 787s in active revenue service for United. Initially placed into service on Houston-Newark and Houston-San Francisco routes, on this day it is running Chicago and Los Angeles runs instead. A third 787, N26902, has also joined the United fleet, though it hasn't entered service yet, and in fact it is parked at the western end of LAX at this very moment.

Due to the arrival after dusk, I am pushing my equipment to the limit (my telephoto lens is a 55-200mm kit lens with painfully slow f/5.6 opening), so I had to shoot at either high ISO and lots of grain, or slow down the shutter and risk blurry shots.

At least this is the first plane that allows me to get that coveted "beacon flash" shot. As the 787's beacon uses LEDs, its flash is a bit longer, therefore it's easier to get a beacon flash shot on a 787.

Boeing has done away with customer codes starting with the 787. This makes this aircraft's model number the 787-8, as opposed to 787-822 (United Airlines code) or 787-824 (Continental Airlines code, since Continental had ordered and configured this aircraft prior to merging with United).

The paint livery is clearly indicative of the New United; the name is United, and the basic livery design is the Disco Ball inherited from Continental, but the twist for the 787 is that the gold cheatline takes on the shape of the Boeing trademark swoop, to symbolize the longtime partnership between Boeing and United (including United's origins as Boeing's in-house airline, Boeing Air Transport).
