Summary

[edit]
Description

This is an ore car used from 1968 to 1998 by United States Steel Corporation's Minnesota Ore Operations to haul taconite from an iron mine in the town of Virginia, Minnesota to a taconite processing plant (Minntac Plant). Empty, this rail car weighs 85,000 pounds. It's capacity is 200,000 pounds of taconite.

The iron mines in this part of Minnesota formerly targeted high-grade iron ore in the Paleoproterozoic-aged Biwabik Iron-Formation (~1.878 Ga). In modern times, it has been economic to mine the lower-grade iron ore, which is called taconite.

This taconite ore car was on display at the Mineview in the Skyline overlook (now closed) in Virginia, Minnesota.
