Description
Nederlands: Wie in de buurt van Woensdrecht woont, kent de zwart-gele lesvliegtuigen van de luchtmacht maar al te goed. Maar de 30 jaar oude PC-7’s waren hoognodig aan een modernisering toe om te voorkomen dat ze niet meer zouden kunnen vliegen. Na ruim 10 jaar wikken, wegen en vooral wachten op akkoord, zijn alle 13 nu voorzien van een digitale cockpit. Na jaren van afwezigheid krijgt de luchtmacht in 1989 weer de beschikking over een vliegtuig voor de elementaire opleiding van jacht- en helikoptervliegers. De Zwitserse fabrikant Pilatus levert dan 10 PC-7’s, op dat moment een modern lesvliegtuig dat wereldwijd verkocht wordt. Het tiental groeit in 1997 met nog eens 3 stuks. Maar als je niets doet, wordt ook een vliegtuig vanzelf oud. De luchtmacht ziet dat in en schetst daarom al in 2004 de contouren van een moderniseringsprogramma om obsolescence, letterlijk vertaald de ouderdom van het toestel, te voorkomen. “Maar dat programma ging door alle bezuinigingen aan en weer uit”, geeft de projectleider van de Defensie Materieel Organisatie, luitenant-kolonel Cor van der Gaag, aan.
