Summary[edit]

Description
English: Upper Room Church of God in Christ, 131 Florida Street at Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. A stone building rough in texture and stout in appearance, the church is an example of the Richardsonian Romanesque style that was nearing the apex of its popularity at the time of its construction (1892); in addition to the foregoing, the ubiquitous round arches and the pyramidal roof on the tower are also hallmarks of the style. This building was the original home of the Central Park Methodist Episcopal Church and stood until 1921 on a site about two miles away at the corner of Morris and Beard Avenues; then, when they commenced construction of a newer and larger church for themselves, they sold the building to the First Free Methodist Church who disassembled the building and moved it to its current site, where they continued to worship until moving to a new building in University Heights in the early 1950s. Next, from 1956 through 1978, the building served as home to Antioch Baptist Church, which now worships at the former St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church on Fillmore Avenue. Upper Room COGIC was founded in 1958 and has occupied this building since at least the mid-1990s.
