Urakami Cathedral was a grand red-brick church standing on an elevated stretch of land 500 meters northeast of the atomic bomb hypocenter. The Catholic faithful living nearby began the protect in 1895 and erected the church one brick at a time over a period of three decades. Upon completion, Urakami Cathedral ws one of the grandest churches in the Far East. The explosion of the atomic bomb at 11:02 a.m. August 9, 1945 ravaged the building.The belfries and walls that remained upright collapsed sonn after,leabing onlya reminant of the church wall. One of the beifries (weighing about 50 tons) rests today on the spot where it fell that day. The Urakami district was populated from the early 17th century by Japanese Christians fleeing persecution after the bombing. Nagasaki City installs this plaque to pray for the repose fo people who died here asa result of the atomic bombing and to insure that this tragedy is never repeated . 爆心地より北東へ約500メートルの小高い丘の上に建つこの赤レンガ造りの浦上天主堂は、原爆により崩壊したが、被災前の天主堂は浦上の地に暮らしていたカトリック信徒たちが、1895年(明治28年)から赤レンガを一枚ずつ積み上げて30年の歳月をかけ建てた。当時としては東洋一の偉容を誇る大聖堂であった。そのかろうじて残っていた堂壁や鐘楼も崩れ落ち、一部の堂壁だけが残った。崩れ落ちた鐘楼の一つ(重量50トン)が現在もこの地に原爆被害の後をとどめて眠っている。 爆心地に程近い当地区は、17世紀初頭に始まるキリシタン禁令の時代からカトリック信徒のおおいところであり、原子爆弾はこのカトリック信徒の聖地にさく裂し、約12,000名の信徒のうち約8,500名が犠牲となった。長崎市はこの地で亡くなられた方々のご冥福をお祈りし、二度とこにょうな惨禍が繰り返されないことを願って、この銘板を設置する。(昭和62年8月) |
