The first plate of a series of 50 small oblong plates all engraved by G.B. de' Cavalieri after drawings by Dosio, of the ruins of ancient Rome as they appeared in the sixteenth century, without any attempt at reconstruction. The BM set is incomplete, lacking plates 29 to 36, and most plates are damaged or frayed at the edges. The plates were registered out of order.

The series was published by Dosio himself in an abortive attempt to gain Cosimo's patronage (see Carolyn Valone, Art Bulletin, LVIII, 1976, p.541).
