| Description |
English: Usk Castle, Gwent, South Wales, 2 June 2018. Built c.1120 as a strongpoint for the Anglo-Norman Marcher Lords, most notably Marcher Lords Fitz Gilbert de Clare and William Marshal ('The Greatest Knight'), to subdue the Welsh. It was captured by the Welsh, taken back by the Normans, recaptured by the Welsh and then taken back for the last time by the Normans in the 12th Century. The last conflict to affect Usk was the rebellion of Owain Glyndwr who had declared himself the true Prince of Wales who took Usk in 1402 but was then defeated by Davy Gam nearby at the Battle of Pwll Melyn. It was 'slighted' (i.e. partially dismantled to prevent it being used as a Royalist defence) by the Parliamentarians at the end of the English Civil War and the gatehouse turned into a house.
