Summary[edit]

Description
English: Photo taken at the Vardøhus Fortress in the town of Vardø in Finnmark, Norway:
  • The 'King's Log' displayed in the Barracks (the Slavery), one of the buildings within the fortress walls. Originally, it was an oak roof beam inscribed with the name of the Danish-Norwegian King Christian IV during his visit to Vardø in 1599. Since then, several Danish and Norwegian royals have signed the staff with their signatures, which were later carved in.
Christian IV sailed northward with eight ships in 1599. The purpose of the expedition was to cleanse His Majesty's "waters" of pirates, privateers, and others sailing north of Vardø without paying tolls to Denmark-Norway. The most tangible memory of the king's visit is the so-called 'King's Log,' which was a roof beam "in a small farmer's house right below the Castle." Throughout history, many kings have written their signatures on the King's Staff. The King's Staff is kept in the Slavery. The Slavery was built in 1745 as a prison for lifelong convicted criminals.
  • Vardøhus Fortress (Norwegian: Vardøhus festning) is located in the town of Vardø in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway, on the island of Vardøya on the Barents Sea near the Russian border. The northernmost fortress in the world was originally built around 1307 as a defense against raids from people further east and to secure Norwegian dominion of Finnmark and the northern territories. The current Vardøhus Fortress was constructed between 1734 and 1738 and remains largely intact in its original form to this day. Covering an area of 25 acres, the defense facility is designed as an octagonal star with low stone-clad earth ramparts. Inside the fortification walls, there are nine distinctive buildings.
