Summary

[edit]
Description The amazing sight of the virtually complete "Vasa" in it's purpose built museum at Stockhom, 6/10. Like stepping back in time. Gustavus Adolphus's Folly, the Vasa was intended to be a prestige flagship ship-of-war of King Gustav II Adolf (which for some biazzare reason we know under his Latinised name) of Sweden, who thought himslef as a successor of the Roman Emperors. He brought Dutch shipwrights to Stockholm to build the Vasa, but his constant interference with the design of the ship resulted in an unstable and over-gunned ship. As a result, on her maiden voyage in 1638, the 1,200 tonnes Vasa, watched by the King and the Stockhom residents as she departed the harbour, capsized in a gust of wind as water poured into the open gun ports of the lower deck. The low salt content and cold temperatures of the Baltic, plus the heavily polluted waters of Stockholm Harbour until modern times, meant the Toredo Worm was absent. Coupled with the mud that buried her, this meant that the Vasa was preserved in the mud on the harbour floor until raised in 1959-61 (it took that long to raise her!)
