Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Verizon Wire Center at 935 Hertel Avenue (corner Rosalia Street), Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Emerging in the 1910s and persisting in popularity through the late 1920s, the so-called "Stripped Classical" style is pretty much exactly what the name implies - a simpler and more inexpensive-to-build take on Neoclassicism popularly used for institutional and neighborhood commercial buildings - but the design of 935 Hertel takes the minimalism to an unusually stark extent. The paucity of identifiable Classical detailing is essentially limited to the entrance, wherein an architrave with a modillion cornice and ancone brackets frames the doorway. Elsewhere on the façade, decorative masonry work in geometric patterns appears between the first and second floors, a brick string course is seen atop the second floor, and keystone-adorned jack arches atop the windows in the slightly projecting side portions of the façade hint at a slight Colonial Revival influence. The date of construction is c. 1928, as determined by the 1927 Erie County Aerial Survey which appears to show the building undergoing construction. It served first as the home of two Buffalo-area New York Telephone exchanges - DElaware and RIverside - and serves essentially the same function today under the aegis of successor company Verizon.
