Description

Vermiculations on a cave passage ceiling in Virginia, USA.

Vermiculations are relatively small, worm-like structures composed of fine-grained sediments that occur on some cave ceilings and walls. These features are thought to form as films of water shrink by evaporation, leaving behind concentrations of material along irregular ridges (e.g., see Bojar et al., 2014).

Skyline Caverns is developed in structurally tilted carbonates (mixed dolostones and limestones) of the Rockdale Run Formation (Beekmantown Group, Lower Ordovician).
