Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Messenger, as its name suggest, was designed as a single-seat communications aircraft. The type first flew in 1921 and 42 were built.

On 15th December 1924, a modified Messenger became the first aircraft to successfully attach and release from another aircraft in flight. Flown by Lt Clyde Finter, it hooked on to the TC Class non-rigid airship TC-3 at Scott Field, Illinois, remained hooked-on while the airship made a turn and then released and flew back to the field. This example is actually a civilian two-seat variant known as the Sport Plane and was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by Eddie Rickenbacker in 1957. It has since been converted to single-seat configuration and was fitted with a ‘skyhook’, to represent the M-1 Messenger used in airship trials, although the hook no longer appears to be fitted. Seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
