Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Victoria Memorial needs no introduction. Its historical importance cannot be exaggerated. However, whether it's a reminder of India's oppression in the Elizabethan Era or a beautiful monument nonetheless important culturally, is a question not easily answered. The fact that it immortalizes the Empress under which Britain caused most of the pandemonium in the world, does make it seem a bit pretentious. What everyone can agree on, though, is it's a breathtaking view and definitely worth preserving.

Made of white marble, it sits in the middle of a large complex like a benevolent ruler looking fondly at the land they own. Imposing in stature, it's intricate architecture is awe-inspiring. Even before you're near the gates you can see it in the distance. The moment you turn into the road and notice the memorial, you are in for a spellbinding view. It's even more impressive up-close. The fine handiwork along the walls make you wish to stand and take in each single crevice and carving. Once you behold it in all its glory you'll want to breathe it in.

The scenery around it, inside the complex, is lush green and a soothing sight for the eyes. Once inside, you're transported to a place outside the Metropolitan rush, and can feel calmness coursing through your veins. It's like the weight of existence is lifted off of you. Sitting on the grass, and letting go of your identity for some time is a remarkably refreshing experience. It's why this is a favourite spot for many. You'll always spot a flock of couples at Victoria. They are oblivious to the rest of the world, and this place allows them to be.

Ticket kiosks are almost always full, and as a lovers' retreat, Victoria is famous amongst Kolkata youngsters. It's not like you have to avoid it during holidays though, even if you're uncomfortable at public displays of affection. The complex is vast and there's space for everyone to enjoy the place and its majestic, but simultaneously soothing vibe. Even though the most common visitors are the aforementioned youth, you'll also always find some fascinated, wide-eyed first-timers there. Plus, the light and sound shows organized here, are a must-watch, at least once in your life. They're larger than life, commemorative and extremely memorable.

The grandeur of the place, especially because of what it stands for along with how it looks, is not intimidating, however. Contextually, it's a memorial, but culturally, it's so much more. It's a celebration of the city's ability to endure growth and hold on to its identity. It's a favourite destination for many as an after-work hang. Its relevance to this day is the testimony of how times change, but culture only evolves. The fact that even 100 years after its establishment, it is still so widely popular, and not just as a heritage site, but as a location to spend time at, is genuinely fascinating.
