| Description |
English: Victorian Railways 5'3" gauge N C Harris 'X' Class main line freight 2-8-2 No.X36, built by VR Newport in 1929, withdrawn 1961, at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. VR Newport built 29 - 11 in 1929-30 and 18 1937-47 with modified front ends, smoke deflectors, all-steel Belpaire boilers with a combustion chamber and thermic syphons (the earlier engines were modigfied to match) and fabricated trailing truck instead of cast steel ones. They were an enlarged 'C' Class 2-8-0 with a wide firebox necessitating a trailing truck and were convertible to standard gauge. All bar 1 (X36) had a booster. Unlike the 'C's', they were very free steaming. 1 was equipped to burn pulverised brown coal in 1949 and it was planned to convert all the class and build 15 more in 1950 but this was abandoned with the onset of dieselisation. On one occasion in 1951 the usual 'S' Class Pacific on the prestigious Melbourne - Sydney failed at Wallan and was replaced by No.X32 - which worked the train and lost just 3 minutes! They were withdrawn in 1957-61. |
