Victoria Square Looking South
Photographer
State Government Photographer
Title
Victoria Square Looking South
Description

See also GN03181, which shows statue of Hercules, which was unveiled in 1892. King William Street was extended through the square in 1883 (although the Victoria Square Thoroughfare Act 1882 was gazetted in 1882, the extension wasn't officially opened until 30 November 1883 - South Australian Register 1/12/1883). Therefore the image is more likely to have been taken circa 1884-1892. The State Library holds a copy of this image (B 23937) and puts the date as c.1890. (K Blackwood 29/5/2012)

Before 1905. Lewis Cohen House opened adjacent to Government Building, on North side, in that year. See also GN03181 (which shows the building on the corner of Wakefield Street and the Square, which first appears in the directory in 1897. King William Street, in the foreground, was put through the Square in 1882. (G Brooks)

Date changed from 1910s to 1900s to reflect G Brooks' notes.
