Description
Français : Bellac (87), chef-lieu d'arrondissement de 4 000 hab., et son activité de tannerie présente depuis le Moyen-Age.

Vue depuis le belvédère au bas du centre ville, bordant le quartier historique:

  • au 1er plan, jardin des Côtes;
  • tout à droite de l'image, partiellement masqué, viaduc voie ferrée Poitiers-Limoges;
  • plus au centre rivière du Vincou, alimentant l'usine Gal. Cette PME familiale, pôle d'excellence occupant à l'heure actuelle une vingtaine de salariés, sous-traite notamment pour Hermès. En-dehors de la petite maroquinerie, l'atelier sort également des selles de cheval très réputées, exportées dans le monde entier, ainsi qu'une gamme d'accessoires tels brides, harnais etc. La production a pourtant été longtemps menacée en raison de normes sur l'eau, rejets et traitement, de plus en plus contraignantes. Le sellier recours au tannage végétal à base d'écorce de chêne, pour préparer ses peaux de bovins. Enfin, une station de traitement est installée au coeur même du site et les boues, dépourvues de métaux lourds, récupérées pour les prairies alentours.
