Our cute little slow-boat up the Mekong. Goodbye Vietnam, hello Cambodia! Taking the slow-boat trip from Chau Doc, Vietnam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, cost at the time $10 USD and takes all day. There was something really charming having a border crossing that starts from the dock of a river. You stop first at a group of cafés and wait for your Cambodian visa to be processed and put in your passport. It can take an hour or 2, although we were very fortunate with our guide who had put them in advance of our arrival and shortened our wait time. Then it is to the actual border crossing a short bit away where you get your stamps and change to another Cambodian boat (this one), then it is off again up the river and then a final 1 1/2 hour in a minibus to Phnom Penh proper. You can see beside us the fast boat option which gets you in an hour or 2 earlier without the minibus leg. I liked our boat better and chose it more for the atmosphere than the lower price. |
