English: Artist: Daniell, Thomas (1749-1840)

Medium: Pencil on paper Date: 1792 Pencil drawing by Thomas and William Daniell of the view of Rayakottai, dated 9 May 1792. Inscribed on back in ink: '199 Raicotta'; in pencil: 'Riacotta. May 9th, 1792.'

Rayacottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan's forces on their campaigns in the Tamil country. In the Journal that the young William Daniell kept we read (entry for 9 May 1792), "Ryacotta is one of the highest and strongest hill forts of the Barramah'l." It was captured in July 1791 by Major Gowdie, '...who soon carried by assault the lower works which enclosed the Pettah' (the commercial suburb outside a fortress).
