Summary[edit]

Description

View of the toadstools near the Paria Ranger Station, in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, northern Arizona

  • "I was in Page, AZ in April 2010 to visit Coyote Butte North and took a drive to the the Paria Ranger Station - about 20 miles from Page across the Utah border. After this stop I wanted to drive the Cottonwood Canyon Road to Kodachrome Basin State Park but the Ranger told me the Cottonwood Road was in very bad shape (it is a dirt road) with huge ruts and it might take 4 hours to go 40 miles. She suggested an area about two miles east of the Ranger Station known for its toadstools - rocks balanced on eroded columns - I check it out and it was very worth it. It's less than a one mile hike in on a good trail - the only problem was the wind was really picking up at the leading edge of a nasty Pacific storm - so by the time I hit the trail dust and sand was flying everywhere - it was very hard to protect my eyes and camera gear at the same time. This is definitely a place to check out again in the future - there was a lot in the surrounding area I didn't get to see."
