Description
Arnesen was in East Asia in 1899-1900 aboard the Annam as part of a Danish delegation, headed by H. N. Andersen of the East Asiatic Company, and he probably brought home a lot of sketches from the journey. (Source: Ole Lange, Den hvide elefant, Gyldendal, Copenhagen 1986, page 91). The Annam was built by Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen in 1899 (yard no. 200) for the East Asiatic Company (ØK). In 1902 she was sold to Est Asiatique Francais S.A., Marseille and in 1904 sold on to Messageries Maritimes, Marseille. Torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UC-35 in June 1917 West of Sapienza Island, Greece. miramarshipindex.nz. Arnesen made a painting of the Annam in 1901 and maybe he heard about the sinking in 1917 and decided to do this work. See "Other versions".
