[edit]DescriptionVinctifer comptoni (fossil fish) (Santana Formation, Lower Cretaceous; northeastern Brazil) 2 (33782639035).jpg |
Vinctifer comptoni - fossil fish from the Cretaceous of Brazil. (CMC VP7187B, Cincinnati Museum of Natural History & Science, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA) From museum signage: This concretion from the Santana Formation follows the contours of its entombed gar-like fish. It suggests an episode of rapid burial and fossilization. In some Santana specimens, fossilization was so rapid that detailed cellular structure may be seen with microscopic examination. Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Osteichthyes, Actinopterygii, Aspidorhynchiformes, Aspidorhynchidae Stratigraphy: Santana Formation, upper Lower Cretaceous Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in northeastern Brazil See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinctifer and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santana_Formation |
