Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 29 July 2021, shows multiple smoke clouds generated by the devastating wildfires ongoing in Republic of Türkiye. Violent fires broke out on 28 July in Turkish regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The Copernicus EMS EFFIS early warning component had forecasted very extreme fire danger for many areas of the region. One blaze affected the area of Manavgat, in the Antalya province, and was fuelled by strong winds and scorching temperatures. Another fire broke out the following night in the district of Akseki, 50 kilometres to the north. Three people died in the fires and more than 50 people had to be taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. The smoke generated by the fires, as shown in this Sentinel-3 image, was, at the time of image acquisition, extending up to about 300 km in the Mediterranean Sea and was heading towards the south and Cyprus. Data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites allow high-definition delineation of the areas affected by wildfires.
