Description
English: Vishnu Vikrânta. Nepal 17th century. Stone, traces of polychrome and gilding. Inv. 005. 1; 1. purchase. Georges Labit Museum, Toulouse. In March 2005, the Georges Labit museum acquired at auction a rare stone stele representing Vishnu, tutelary deity of Nepal kings. It attests to the persistence of Hinduism in this country, where it remains the dominant religion, next to the tantric Buddhism. This stela represents an episode of Vishnu's life, which turned into a dwarf, regains the Universe at the expense of demons - asura? Its dynamic composition, characteristic of the Newari art and finesse of execution, show Indian influence and importance in the arts of Nepal.
Français : Vishnu Vikrânta. Népal, XVIIe siècle. Pierre, traces de polychromie et de dorure. Inv. 005. 1. 1. achat.
