English: The International Year against Apartheid was officially launched at UNESCO's Paris Headquarters on March 21, 1978. In the evening, the Director-General, Mr Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, spoke at a ceremony which also featured Donald Woods, the Newspaper Editor who had to flee from South Africa when he was placed under a ban because of his opposition to Apartheid, His Excellency MrBamful Turkaon, Ambassador of Ghana and Chairman of the Conference to draft a declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice. A concert given by Myriam Makeba closed the ceremony
Français : L'Année internationale pour la lutte contre l'Apartheid a été lancée officiellement à Paris au Siège de l'UNESCO, le mardi 21 mars 1978. Le soir, le Directeur général M. Amadou Mahtar M'Bow, a pris la parole lors d'une cérémonie à laquelle ont également participé Donald Woods, ce journaliste sud africain qui a fui son pays lorsqu'il a été frappé d'un ordre d'interdiction à cause de son opposition à l'Apartheid, et S. Exc. M. Bamful Turkson, ambassadeur du Ghana, Président de la réunion chargée d'élaborer un projet de déclaration sur la race et les préjudices raciaux. Un récital donné par Myriam Makeba a clotué cette soirée
