Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Louis Voisinet House, 429 Englewood Ave. at Fairfield Ave., Tonawanda, New York. One of the oldest buildings in the town, it was built in 1828 by its then forty-year-old namesake, a native of Évette-Salbert, France who had immigrated the same year with his wife and children. His eldest son, also named Louis, inherited the house and the 102 acres (41 ha) of farmland on which it sat, later expanding the family's land holdings to 130 acres (52 ha) and becoming one of the most distinguished citizens of Tonawanda of his day. The farm was sold off to land speculators not many years after the younger Voisinet's death in 1883, and the surrounding neighborhood was built out from roughly the 1920s to the 1950s. The interior of the home was completely rebuilt after being gutted by a fire in the mid-1950s, largely in keeping with the original design; the original entrance door, windows, and marble threshold were salvaged and retained.
