Italiano: Sulle nude pareti della Sala dei Baroni si innalza fino ad un'altezza di ventotto metri la stupenda volta, al cui centro, invece della tradizionale chiave, è posto un luminoso oculo, da cui si dipartono sedici costoloni in piperno che, raccordandosi ad altri elementi minori, creano un disegno stellare, evidenziando il contrasto cromatico tra il grigio dei costoloni, in piperno di Pozzuoli, ed il giallo delle pareti e delle volte in tufo. Alla base della copertura si sviluppa una galleria, il cammino di ronda, che si apre con otto finestre quadrate per ognuna delle soprastanti lunette.
Era la "Sala Mayor" del Castello angioino, voluta da Roberto D'Angiò ed affrescata da Giotto verso il 1330, con le raffigurazioni degli Uomini (e delle donne) illustri dell'antichità: Sansone, Ercole, Salomone, Paride, Ettore, Achille, Enea, Alessandro e Cesare, probabilmente con le loro "compagne". Il contenuto di questo ciclo di affreschi, purtroppo perduti, viene descritto dall'anonimo autore di una raccolta di sonetti, databili intorno al 1350 circa. Sotto il regno di Alfonso d'Aragona (1442-1458) la Sala fu rifatta ed ampliata dall'architetto maiorchino Guglielmo Sagrera, occupando solo in parte il sito della più piccola sala angioina. Il solenne ambiente è il più celebre del Castello e viene chiamato "Sala dei Baroni" in quanto nel 1486 vi furono arrestati i baroni che avevano partecipato alla congiura contro Ferrante I d'Aragona, invitati dallo stesso re per festeggiare le nozze di sua nipote con il figlio del conte di Sarno. Nel 1919 la struttura è stata danneggiata da un incendio che ha distrutto quasi tutte le decorazioni scultoree. Alla sinistra del portale d'ingresso si nota il marmoreo Portale bifronte, opera di Domenico Gagini, che metteva in comunicazione la Sala con l'appartamento dei re aragonesi. Sugli architravi, semidistrutti dall'incendio, vi sono due bassorilievi; in quello che guarda verso la Sala è raffigurato il Corteo trionfale di Alfonso, nell'altro l'Ingresso del Re nel Castello. Sulla parete settentrionale, attraverso un portale catalano molto rovinato, si accede alla Camera degli Angeli, detta così perchè era affrescata con scene raffiguranti angeli. Nella parete verso il mare, tra le due finestre quadripartite da una croce in piperno, si apre un grande camino rettangolare sovrastato da due tribune destinate ai musici e decorate da due transenne, andate distrutte, e dal disegno flamboyant simile a quello del rosone della Cappella Palatina. Nell'angolo sud-est della Sala, attraverso una porta gotica, si accede alla spettacolare scala a chiocciola, attualmente inagibile, tutta in piperno, che, con andamento spiraliforme, dall'abside della Cappella Palatina conduce alla Sala dei Baroni ed alle terrazze superiori. L'ambiente è illuminato anche da un balcone detto "Trionfale" di cui è originale la base a forma di piramide rovesciata, ornata da finissimi intagli in pietra di Maiorca. Il pavimento della Gran Sala era in maiolica invetriata bianca e azzurra, proveniente dalle fabbriche di Valencia. Attualmente la Sala viene utilizzata come sala convegni del Consiglio Comunale.English: On the bare walls of the Hall of the Barons it rises to a height of twenty meters the wonderful time at the center, instead of the traditional key, has placed a bright oculus, from which depart sixteen ribs piperno, liaising with other elements minors, creating a stellar design, highlighting the color contrast between the gray of the ribs, piperno of Pozzuoli, and the yellow of the walls and vaults in tuff. At the base of the roof develops a gallery, the parapet walk, which opens with eight square windows for each of the lunettes above it.
It was the "Sala Mayor" of the Angevin Castle, built by Robert of Anjou and frescoes by Giotto in 1330, with depictions of Men (and women) illustrious antiquity: Samson, Hercules, Solomon, Paris, Hector, Achilles Aeneas, Alexander and Caesar, probably with their "companions." The content of this cycle of frescoes, unfortunately lost, is described by the anonymous author of a collection of sonnets, dating to about 1350. Under the reign of Alfonso of Aragon (1442-1458) the room was rebuilt and enlarged by the Majorcan Guglielmo Sagrera, occupying only part of the site of the small Angevin room. The solemn atmosphere is the most famous of the Castle and is called the "Hall of the Barons" as in 1486 the barons were arrested who had participated in the conspiracy against Ferrante I of Aragon, invited by the king to celebrate the wedding of his niece with the son of the Count of Sarno. In 1919 the property was damaged by a fire that destroyed almost all the sculptural decorations. To the left of the entrance you notice the two-faced marble portal by Domenico Gagini, which led from the room with the apartment of the Aragonese king. Lintels, partially destroyed by fire, there are two bas-reliefs; in what looks toward the room depicts the triumphal procession of Alfonso, another the entrance of the King in the Castle. On the north wall, through a very ruined Catalan portal, it leads to the Angels Room, so called because it was frescoed with scenes depicting angels. In the wall towards the sea, between the two windows quadripartite by a cross piperno, it opens a large rectangular fireplace topped by two stands intended for musicians and decorated by two hurdles, destroyed, and the flamboyant design similar to that of the rose window of the Chapel Palatine. In the southeast corner of the room, through a gothic door it leads to the spectacular spiral staircase, currently unusable, all piperno, which, with spiral pattern, from the apse of the Palatine Chapel leads to the Hall of the Barons and the upper terraces . The environment is also illuminated by a balcony called "Triumphal" which is the original base shaped like an inverted pyramid, decorated with fine stone carvings of Mallorca. The Great Room floor was tiled in white and blue glazed, coming from Valencia factories. Currently the room is used as meetings hall of the City Council. |
