Built in 1970 as a Harrier Mk.50 with the British military serial XW647. Delivered to the US Marines in January 1971 as an AV-8A with the US Navy Bureau number 158387. In Marines service it was operated by VMA-513 “Flying Nightmares” and VMA-231 “Ace of Spades” until it was converted to an AV-8C in 1979. It then began a test and trials career, first with VX-5 at China Lake and then with the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River. In 1986 it was assigned to the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in California and was used for boundary layer, STOL and V/STOL research. While with NASA it flew as ‘NASA 719’ and was allocated the registration N719NA. It was retired by NASA in 1995 and joined the Miramar collection in 2008, where it is preserved in the markings of VMA-513 “Flying Nightmares”.
