Description

Alligator
Alligator mississsippiensis

The American alligator is found nowhere else but North America. It grows to a length of fifteen feet and is now commonly found in any marsh, swamp, bayou or other body of water, fresh or brackish.

It is generally shy and not aggressive toward humans unless it is guarding its nest. It can catch large animals such as deer, raccoons and even dogs, if they venture within reach.

The alligator lays from 30 to 70 eggs in a nest made of rotting vegetation. The young hatch in late summer to early fall and remain with their protective mother for over a year.

Although its numbers were low in the 1960’s and 70’s through state protection, they have become common again and are now hunted and farmed for their hides and meat.
