Neoclassicism was not confined to France, and Appiani was one of the movement's leading representatives in Italy.

This sketch exemplifies his preoccupation with classical motifs. It is based on the central head from the famous Greek sculpture group of the second century B.C., which depicts Laocoon and his two sons writhing in the grip of two snakes. Appiani transcribes this life and death struggle, painting Laocoon's anguished features with great freedom of brushwork.
