The first force, Viken Battalion, consisted of 1000 men and was shipped to Kiel and transported to recruit school at Fallingbostel Heide (Truppenübungsplatz Lager Falligbostel on the Lüneburg Heath, Lower Saxony). The recruit school was as tough and disciplinary as in the SS, but the legion never became a typical Waffen-SS unit like the Wiking. For a long time, the legionnaires were allowed to wear a sewn-on Norwegian flag on their sleeves under the SS eagle, and even at the front, the Norwegians wore a stylized Norwegian lion instead of the SS runes on their right collar patch.
