Summary

[edit]
Description

This valley is a special place to native Hawaiians. Referred to as the Valley of the Kings, it was the historic location of the ancient grass palace of the ancient "kings" of Hawaiʻi. It is said that this is where it was foretold that the great King Kamaehameha would one day rule the islands. The towering cliffs seen here were the burial sites for rulers and chiefs.

Several large waterfalls drop from a 2,000 ft (610 m) plateau into this valley, feeding a river that flows into the ocean here. At the time of Captain Cook’s arrival in 1778, the valley was a thriving community that was at one time home to several thousand people. But on 1 April 1946, an 8.6-magnitude earthquake in Alaska set off a Pacific-wide tsunami that swept all the way to Hawai’i, washing away nearly everything in the valley. Only a few people live there now.
