| Description |
English: Built as a double track railroad bridge, it was completed on January 1, 1889, and formed part of the Maybrook Railroad Line of the New Haven Railroad. It was taken out of service on May 8, 1974, after it was damaged by fire. The Walkway over the Hudson is a steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie, New York, on the east bank and Highland, New York, on the west bank. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and its entry updated in 2008.
82 years prior, this area was the scene of the famous regatta row @ Poughkeepsie, NY. Daniel James Brown's book, “The Boys in the Boat” tells the story of the University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew and their epic quest for a Berlin Olympic gold medal during the depression-era, a team that transformed the sport and grabbed the attention of millions of Americans. |
