| Description |
German war trophies, including some collected by Otago soldiers, were en route from France to England on this day 25 October 1918. The War Records Office in London wrote a letter of thanks to the 2nd Battalion Otago Regiment, saying that “signal equipment, German cycle etc presented by your unit” would be presented to the War Museum where they would form part of a permanent memorial to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The Captain in charge of the War Records Office went on to say: “It should not be forgotten that enemy trophies do not provide sole field for the collector. Articles of interest connected with your own trophies may be even more interesting than enemy trophies. Every effort is being made on this side to complete the collection by obtaining exhibits from the Allied Governments and the pictorial side is also being attended to.” Shown here is a further letter to the Otago Regiment, enquiring about some more trophies including an enemy tank.
