Alors qu'il semble impossible d'évoquer le XXe siècle sans citer les guerres – totales, civiles ou génocides – et les violences qui ravagèrent les continents, à l'aube du XXIe, des frontières de l'Europe nous parviennent des images – chaque fois nouvelles mais qu'il nous emble revoir – de fosses communes, d'enfants affamés ou assassinés, de corps décharnés, de camps de réfugiés fuyant une violence que l'on croyait d'un autre temps. Cette violence génère une cascade de questionnements et une recherche de certitudes dans la profusion éditoriale disponible – témoignages, analyses politiques, sociologie de la guerre, psychologie sociale – comme autant de réponses aux inquiétudes de l'Homme moderne.
