Summary[edit]

Description The Jefferson Memorial, Tidal Basin, and Potomac River, looking southeast from the Washington Monument. The Jefferson Memorial was built iln 1939-1943. A bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson was added in 1947. The 14th Street Bridges across the Potomac River to Arlington, Virginia are at right center. The top bridge is a railroad bridge. This photo was taken in 1998 Since then, a bridge for the Metro subway system has been added. National Airport (now Reagan National Airport is in the "peninsula" on the Potomac in the background. The airport was built mostly on reclaimed land.
