Summary[edit]

Description Cleveland City Hall was designed by J. Milton Dyer and built in the Neoclassical style in 1916 as part of the Daniel Burnham Group Plan that laid out the city's Civic Center in 1903. The building sits at the edge of a bluff overlooking the lakefront, giving the building a prominent position as viewed from the harbor and Lake Erie. The building on the exterior forms a large, rectangular volume, which is faced with gray stone and several colonnades, with the central portion of the building having a more prominent mezzanine floor, giving it the illusion of being taller than the rest of the structure on either side. Inside, the structure has three light wells, with the two outer light wells being open-air and reaching down to the second floor, with the central light well being crowned with a skylight, and allowing light to reach the Rotunda on the first floor. The building's interior has been altered in several areas, but the corridors and significant common areas, including the rotunda, have remained largely unaltered since construction, while the council chambers and offices have gone through several renovations, most of which occurred in the later half of the 20th Century. The building's exterior, meanwhile, has been largely unaltered since construction, though the construction of the Willard Park Garage in the rear has made the building appear more grounded and less prominent than it was original. Today, the building does show signs of neglect and a leaky roof, but seems to be holding up well otherwise, and has many of its original features still intact, making it one of the most beautiful and historically intact city halls of a major US city still in use.
